Thornapple Spinone
"Paws for Love"
The Italian Spinone (spi-N0-nay) has begun to find popularity far beyond it's native Italy. Our family has grown to love this sweet-natured, scruffy looking, devoted, personable breed.
This large squarely built, sturdy dog with a wiry coat is a loyal and gentle companion. Both male and female have a distinctive moustache, beard and hairy eyebrows. Their large round eyes, the iris an ochre color, more or less dark depending on the coat color, are humanlike and full of expression.
Colors range from pure white, white with orange markings, white speckled with orange, white with brown (chestnut) markings, roan or roan brown (chestnut). The preferred shade of brown is the color of Capuchin friar's frocks".
The Italian Spinone is a very talented hunting breed. They like to hunt close, checking back with their hunter from time to time. This natural instinct makes them an ideal companion for a leisurely paced search for game.
This gentle disposition and relaxed attitude towards life makes the Spinone an ideal candidate for a family pet. They are easily trained in the appropriate manners, which makes these dogs a joy to live with. This is a very "people oriented" breed, requiring a maximum of human contact. As we have found out, they want to be with you all of the time from taking a shower in the morning to being a couch potato at night!
Efforts do have to be made to socialize your puppy as the Spinone is naturally cautious of strangers and strange situations. Constant exposure to new situations both at home and away will result in a well adjusted dog. Your Spinone will greet you and the world with sparkling eyes, a wagging tail, and a positive attitude for everything around him. A guard dog he won't be, but he will sound the alarm if intruders are near.
The Spinone lives an average 10-12 years, so consider carefully if you are prepared for that sort of commitment before bringing one home. The Spinone is highly adaptable and willing to share their life with nearly all creatures. If you want one of the worlds most wonderful constant companions - a Spinone may be just the dog for you.
And remember...Spinone tend to be addictive...you will have to have more than just one!
